Neil Thwaites - The Corn Dolly Man

Neil Thwaites

1931 - 1999

Neil Thwaites moved to the East Riding of Yorkshire from the Lake District in 1957, to join Market Weighton Secondary School as head of the Art Department.  Market Weighton was at the centre of a thriving farming community, and the school in those days taught both traditional and agricultural subjects.

His interest in Corn Dolly making began in the early 1950's when he learned the craft from an elderly local farmer, and he soon became known affectionately as the "Corn Dolly Man".  He was a Founder Member of the Guild of Straw Craftsmen, and was their President from 1989 to 1999.

A tribute to this well loved man who inspired many with his artistic talents can be found at www.wicstun.com/corndolly/
