Mayor seeks ideas for Golden Jubilee celebrations.
How will the town celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee?
8 February 2002
Mayor of Market Weighton, councillor Stephen King, is holding a public meeting in the town today to invite all interested residents and organisations to discuss a town-wide celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee.
Interviewed this morning by Andy Comfort of Radio Humberside,
Councillor King said that it was hoped that support for the event would be the
same as that achieved for the silver jubilee celebrations in 1977. The
purpose of the meeting was to assess support in the town, and a committee would
probably be set up to take things forward.
It is expected that 50 to 60 people will attend. Councillor King did not
think that there would be street parties as there were in 1977, and it is more
likely that the celebrations will be combined with the Giant Bradley Day celebration
which takes place on Sunday May 26th, one week prior to the official Golden
Jubilee celebration.
The Town Council have set aside a sum of £2000 to cover organisational
and administrative costs of the celebrations.

In the event a successful meeting was held, attended by between 40 and 50 local residents, representing various local organisations. There was much support for a town celebration and a Community Committee has now been formed to progress the many ideas that were put forward.
