Local Scouts to transform neglected graveyard.
8 February 2002
Market Weighton scouts have taken on the task of transforming a neglected graveyard into a wildlife sanctuary, as a service to the local community. The initial job will be to clear the site and map the positions of the many graves on the site, and in the long term the area will include walkways, picnic sites and a much improved environment for local flora and fauna.
The disused cemetery on Londesborough Road has been neglected for over 50 years, and has become somewhat of an eyesore due to overgrowing vegetation, weeds and fallen branches from some of the mature trees on the site. Many of the gravestones and memorials are in a poor condition, and some require sympathetic repositioning. The graveyard will be the resting place of the ancestors of many residents of the local area, in fact the majority of the memorials date back to around 1850. It is indeed a shame that those responsible for the site over the years have let it deteriorate so much.

The town council have set aside £1500 for the coming year which, together with funds being raised by other groups, will ensure that the project is on a sound footing.
It is good to see local youth working to enhance the town, and the scouts should be given every encouragement for their project.
