Tragedy hits Kiplingcotes Derby
The 2002 Race is sadly marred by the death of the second horse past the winning post.
Ken Holmes wins the race for the tenth time.
The 483rd Kiplingcotes Derby was held today, 21st March 2002. Although it was a fine day the race only attracted eight runners, all who made the 11 o'clock deadline for the traditional weighing in ceremony. Entries were well down compared to the eighteen who entered in 2000, the 2001 race of course being cancelled due to the nationwide outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
The race card :-
| Horse | Rider |
| Markham Lad | D Pritchard |
| Jimmy | Ethel Worthington |
| Monty | Ken Holmes |
| Shantih | Rachel Lewis |
| Josey | S Sanderson |
| Pogo | Sarah Stone |
| Arnie | Ken Simpson |
| Burt | Robert Howarth |
A large crowd gathered in anticipation at the finishing post to see Ken Holmes increase his tally of wins to ten, on his mount "Monty".
The second horse, close on the heels of "Monty", was "Burt" ridden by Robert Howarth. Sadly "Burt" collapsed and died only yards past the finishing post, a shock to the many spectators who were gathering to congratulated the riders.
The third horse home was "Shantih", ridden by Rachel Lewis.
