Richard Peake elected to local council in local election.
A low turnout reflects apathy of electors in the town !
The election held on Thursday 21st March 2002 to fill the vacancy
on Market Weighton Town Council following the resignation of Doreen Plews, resulted
in Labour candidate Richard Peake being elected. The total number of votes
being cast was low, being only 18.2% of the electorate.
This low turnout of voters reflects the apathy of some local residents to local
affairs; many are keen to criticise the efforts of the local council but few
are prepared to do anything about it. There was no excuse for residents
not knowing about the election, it was publicised in the local press and ballot
cards were issued to all on the electoral register, although it could be said
that the candidates themselves did not seem to be knocking on residents' front
doors in true canvassing tradition !
We can only hope that another chance for local residents to exercise their frachise will be more fruitful when an election is held to replace Mrs. D Lamb.
