Lynn Milson elected to Town Council at second attempt.
With a turnout of 21.4%, a closely fought battle between five candidates resulted in Lynn Milson being elected to the Town Council at the second attempt within two months.
The election held on Thursday 16th May 2002 was called following the resignation of Mrs D Lamb. It was keenly fought between five candidates, three of whom stood at the last election held on 21st March.
The results
| Candidate | Votes |
| Kim Andrews-Devine (Labour) | 184 |
| John Coxhead - Independent | 229 |
| Lynn Milson - Independent | 267 |
| David Morrell | 202 |
| Lorna P Toyne - Independent | 36 |
| Electorate | 4312 |
| Total Ballot Papers Issued | 922 |
| Rejected Ballot Papers | 4 |
| % Turnout | 21.4 |
The turnout of 21.4% was a an improvement over the previous election (at 18.2%), and is perhaps typical of local elections in small communities.
However one cannot ignore the fact that some 3390 electors have chosen not to exercise their right to vote for their local council, and it will no doubt be these people who stand on street corners and in the local market complaining that their local council are doing nothing for them !
But, sadly, that is the way things are !
It is interesting to note the way that the
votes for individual candidates change from one election to
another.......
| Candidate | 21st March 2002 | 16th May 2002 | % Change |
| John Coxhead - Independent | 171 | 229 | + 33.9 |
| Lynn Milson - Independent | 183 | 267 | +45.9 |
| Lorna P Toyne - Independent | 101 | 36 | -64.3 |
The voting preferences of electors can be influenced by many things, such as the amount of canvassing carried out by the individual candidates, their political persuasions, their manifestos, and in this election the potential adverse publicity which appeared in the letters page of the local newspaper especially on election day.
