Travellers have again encamped on Becklands Park Industrial Estate, York Road.
Padlocked gates fail to prevent travellers from setting up camp. No doubt local community charge payers will contribute to clearing up the mess.
Yet again travellers have encamped on grassland at Becklands Park Industrial Estate, York Road. This is becoming a regular occurrence, following previous visits in January 2002 and July 2001. This visit was brief, lasting only a few days, and the site was vacated on Saturday 1st June. Following the last visit the gate allowing access to the grassed area was secured with a stout padlock, however it has been damaged, probably beyond repair, allowing caravans and other vehicles to enter the fields. Travellers also camped on the road itself.
It is probably no coincidence that the gates to one of the pumping stations on the estate have been vandalised, however it remains debatable who is responsible.
As has happened following previous visits, when the travellers vacated the site they left considerable amounts of litter, the removal of which the residents of Market Weighton will no doubt contribute to via their community charges. The sanitary habits of the travellers are to be deplored, there being very clear evidence that an area behind the nearby factory has been used as a toilet.
Those responsible for the site should take note, and make every effort to prevent further visits in the future.
