Too Many empty Business Premises in the town - An Update.
Cash available to revamp town ?
It is now 6 months since this was reported in the "Town Crier", and still it is very evident that there are still many empty shop / business premises either standing vacant and unkempt, or available for rent. Some of the properties previously reported as empty have since been occupied, however the overall situation has really not changed.
It is not unusual for local enterprising folk to set up small businesses which seem to flourish for a few months only to close down; the often heard comment is that the rent has been increased or the business rate has been raised to such a level that the business becomes unviable.
Why ?
Are greedy landlords charging too much rent, are local authorities increasing business rates to prohibitive levels, or are our enterprising entrepreneurs just too ambitious ?
Hopefully steps are to be taken to address the situation following publication of the Weighton Area Regeneration Partnership action plan. Councillor Stephen King, mayor of Market Weighton, has said that grants from the Market Towns Initiative could be given to businesses in order to help them refurbish. This is a positive step, it is clear that efforts need to be made, Market Weighton deserves to look better than it does at the present.
Latest Situation:
It can now be confirmed that the Weighton Area Regeneration Partnership has
been awarded HERS
funding for the improvement / refurbishment of properties within the town centre.
