Local Council Elections - May 2003
Latest
Local apathy results in only twelve nominations for the local council. Consequently there will not be a local election for the town council on 1st May. This unique opportunity for local residents to influence the progress of the town during the regeneration period has sadly not been grasped.
With the town entering its important
regeneration phase one might have expected more residents to
stand for service on the local council, in the event only twelve
nominations have been lodged to fill the thirteen seats in the
council chamber. This is unusual, during the last two
by-elections to fill occasional vacancies there have been more
nominations than seats and keenly fought contests took place.
So, what has brought this about:..................
Are local residents happy with current councillors (the lack of
an election means most will remain).
Do they care anyway.
Did they know there was going to be an election - there did seem
to be a lack of local publicity.
Was the opportunity to link regeneration with the election not
realised.
Lots of unanswered questions to which no doubt you the reader may have comments.
In a true democracy an election would have been preferred, however this is not to be and we put our trust in those nominated for Market Weighton Town Council.
