Councillor Stephen King re-elected for a 14th term as Town Mayor.

At the Annual Market Weighton Town Council Meeting held in the Town Hall, Linegate on Wednesday 7th May 2003, Cllr Stephen King was re-elected for a 14th term as Town Mayor.  This is a unique achievement in the history of Market Weighton and, according to officials at the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, possibly in the country as a whole.

At the same meeting Cllr Michael Seaward was also re-elected as Deputy Town Mayor.  The elections for both Mayor and Deputy were uncontested.

The one vacancy on MWTC following the 1st May uncontested election will be filled by co-option and eligible members of the electorate are invited to tender written expressions of interest to the Town Clerk by Monday 26th May.

Councillor King is to be congratulated on being re-elected for what will be his 13th consecutive year in office, and this is no doubt a reflection of the confidence bestowed by the members of the Town Council.  Local residents may question the process that allows a council member to serve in this important position for such a long time, however we live in a democracy that permits anyone of good standing to put themselves forward for election to the Town Council and then to stand for the office of Mayor.  The local apathy which resulted in only twelve nominations for the thirteen seats available for the election that might have been on 1st May sadly is a reflection of the attitude of voters in the town today.
