Empty Business Premises in the Town - An Update.

An Improvement in Sight ?

The issue of empty business premises in the town was first reported in the "Town Crier" in April 2002, and at that time it was very evident that there were many empty shop / business premises either standing vacant and unkempt, or available for rent.  Some of the properties previously reported as empty have since been occupied, and others have become vacant, however at last the situation seems to be changing.

Of the six properties shown below, four have been recently sold or are under offer, or are subject to future plans, and we wait in anticipation to see the situation develops over the coming months.

This is good news for Market Weighton as the town deserves to look better than it does at the present, and coupled with the latest news concerning the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS) funding we should have a town to be proud of.

The Tack Shop
34 High Street.

Formerly occupied by Phoenix Flowers who have now moved to the corner of Southgate and High Street.  Currently being used as a store room for a small residential development to the rear of the building.
This attractive cottage on Market Place, once "The Tack Shop" has been unused for several years and is rapidly becoming an eyesore.

It is believed that this property is being considered for use as a Learning Centre by the East Riding Learning Partnership.
Lofts Electrical Shop

British Red Cross
"Loft's" Electrical and TV shop on Market Place has been empty for several years and has now becoming somewhat dilapidated.

In the last week this property now carries a 'sale agreed' notice, hopefully the start of a new lease of life for this poor building.
The "British Red Cross" and "Citizens Advice Bureau" on Londesborough Road, has been unoccupied now for some considerable time.

It has now been sold, so hopefully the new owners will put it to good use.
