Market Weighton businesses trained to be friendliest in East Yorkshire
Market Weighton, today 22nd July 2003, launches a town-wide training scheme, which will help to make it one of the friendliest towns in the county. The Yorkshire Tourist Board’s Welcome Host course is for all businesses in the town that come into contact with visitors to this part of Yorkshire.
“The course is about creating a culture of friendliness for all visitors to the town.” said Andy Burton, Chairman of Weighton Area Regeneration Partnership (WARP), the organisation that has brought the Yorkshire Tourist Board course to the town. “This fits with our objectives of making Market Weighton the perfect place to visit by promoting the town’s position at the heart of East Yorkshire, emphasising the strong community spirit and raising awareness of the historical and environmental attractions of the area as well as the excellent walking, cycling and horse riding country that we have on our doorstep”.
The course is one of the first projects to be initiated since WARP produced its Visitor Strategy in April this year, with funding from the Market Towns Initiative. Chairman of WARP’s Tourism Action Group, Stephen King added: “The Visitor Strategy has given the town an effective work programme which we will use to ensure that we attract more visitors to Market Weighton and that they have a full experience when here. The first step is to make sure that we have businesses that actively engage visitors, ensuring that they are fully catered for.”
Subjects on the course include everything from dealing with complaints and giving free local guidance, to being able to remember names of guests in the town.
Local businessman Peter Morehouse, who took the plunge with the course some months ago, said: “The day was extremely worthwhile, but what is fantastic is that with Welcome Host coming to Market Weighton, our businesses will really be able to make the objectives of the course fit with our own. It's just great that all the businesses will be wearing the same Welcome Host hat when dealing with visitors.”
The first course will run on Tuesday 22nd July at the Londesborough Arms Hotel. Anyone in the Weighton area interested in finding out more information for future courses should contact Dan Offord on 01430 876825, or on Daniel.offord@yorkshire-forward.com
Photographers are welcome from 9.30 onwards in the Bradley Room of the Londesborough Arms.
