The Market Weighton

Town Crier

A Christmas message to all those involved in the regeneration of Market Weighton

A thank you to all those invvolved for all the incredible support given to WARP over the last year.  Working together, we have managed to deliver:

  *  A reinvigorated Giant Bradley Festival
  *  A Christmas shopping night that the town can be proud of
  *  A first rate visitor strategy for the town
  *  A business awards scheme that was supported by HSBC
  *  Three newly developed properties through the HERS scheme (with another 5 to be completed by march 2004)
  *  Major small grants to Vixen87FM, Londesborough Cricket Club, Giant Bradley marquee, the Broadband feasibility as well as training and publicity       projects supporting both the chamber of trade and the activities of numerous WARP committees
  *  Part of the Market Square scheme (lets hope we can finish this off in the new Year).
  *  Plus, the creation of a major organisation in WARP that can deliver key projects in the future

What is even more exciting, is what we have to come:

  *  A redeveloped Market Site and enhanced weekly market
  *  A local producers market which will be the envy of every town in this area!
  *  Even more developments on the high street as HERS really starts to deliver.
  *  A workable broadband solution for the town and its villages.
  *  A major communications and signage strategy including website, mini guide, interpretation signs and improved brown and gateway signs
  *  the beginning of the major resource centre project.
  *  The incorporation of WARP into a legal entity with a clear business plan for the next 5-10 years.
  *  The development of a community transport scheme worth up to £80,000 which will improve transport links fro all those that live in and around Market       Weighton
  *  The creation of an accommodation group to ensure providers of accommodation are supported in bringing more visitors to Market Weighton.

Other projects that WARP has had a major input into include

  *  Becklands Park industrial estate (due to be finished by march 04)
  *  East Riding Yorkshire Council Depot (bringing something like 35 new jobs to Market Weighton)
  *  East Riding customer service centre at the magistrates court
  *  The development of the tack shop into a learning centre
  *  The support of youth projects such as the skate park group
  *  The development of a town leisure strategy which incorporates all the town's needs.
  *  The submission of a Bid to East Riding for a major new library with more space for lending and learning

What seems clear is that:

More people are talking about Market Weighton
More people are using the town
More businesses are opening and staying open (6 new businesses on the high street alone this year!)
More community volunteers are involved in the town's regeneration than ever before
More residents know what Market Weighton has to offer.

And that's not bad for a year's hard work!
Both WARP and I look forward to working with you to achieve even more in 2004.
Thanks again
