Kingston Communications to bring Broadband to Market Weighton
On 27th February KC announced plans to rollout its Broadband Internet network to 13 East Yorkshire villages, including Market Weighton. This is great news for the town, which has been lagging behind the rest of the country in joining the broadband revolution.
For some time Market Weighton has been in something of a black-hole as far as broadband internet is concerned. A large proportion of telephone users are with Kingston Communications and their Karoo Rapid Time Broadband service has not available due to the considerable distance from the nearest KC exchange. The residue of users are with BT, who have set a totally unrealistic target level of 500 for broadband activation of their exchange in the town. So far we have only reached a figure of 269 and we don't expect to reach the target for many months, if at all. The situation has not been helped by the fact that only BT subscribers can register, so KC customers get more frustrated, both residential and business users alike.
Commenting on the plans to launch the KC service, managing director for Kingston Communications' East Yorkshire division Kevin Walsh said: "We know that people in these areas are crying out for Broadband, and as a result we've decided to extend the reach for both new and existing customers." "In this age of Information Technology, rural businesses and individuals should not be missed out because of their geographic location or size of population. Unlike our competitors, who require requests from at least 200 customers before committing to rolling out Broadband, we are ready now."

The necessary upgrades to KC's system are currently under way,
and a 'switch-on' date of March 25th 2004 has been quoted to your editor.
It is unfortunate that BT's cavalier attitude will not help those BT subscribers
in the town, and it is no coincidence that KC have launched an advertising campaign
in the local newspaper to attract more subscribers ! (Ed.)
