TOWN MAYOR ELECTED FOR 16th YEAR
At the Annual Town Council Meeting of Market
Weighton Town Council held on Wednesday 11th May 2005 at the Town
Hall, Cllr Stephen King was elected unopposed as Town Mayor for
the 2005/6 Civic Year.
This will be Cllr King's 16th year as Town Mayor – he was
first elected Mayor in 1989 and has been re-elected annually
since 1991.
Mrs Tracy Simms, Clerk to the Annual Town Council Meeting, said
“it is unusual for a Town Mayor to be returned to office,
and for this to happen again for the 15th consecutive time is, we
believe, unique within Yorkshire and probably cannot be matched
elsewhere in the country”.
Thanking members for their continued support, Cllr King, a Soil
and Land Use Consultant, said it was an honour and a privilege to
once again be elected to serve as Town Mayor. “I will do my
utmost to uphold the position of Town Mayor and to serve both the
Town Council and the people of Market Weighton to the best of my
ability” he said.
“The role and responsibilities of the Town Council have
broadened considerably in recent years - with greater involvement
in the consultation and delivery programs of local and national
government. As Town Mayor, I welcome this greater involvement, an
involvement which brings with it greater responsibility and I
will continue to lead the Council towards Quality Status and an
increased awareness and recognition within the Unitary Authority,
Regional Quangos and National Government of the importance of
local town- and parish-based democracy”.
“Market Weighton has benefited greatly during the past
three years with the introduction of Market Town Initiative
monies delivered through a wide-base local partnership in which
the Town Council has played a major role”.
“Now that the direct influence of Yorkshire Forward within
the Weighton Area Regeneration Partnership has been removed at
the end funding period, the Town Council - as the elected
representatives of the town - will work tirelessly within the new
partnership framework to bring to fruition the aspirations of the
many and often disparate groups working towards a common aim. I
look forward, as Town Mayor, to playing a full part in this
continuing regeneration of Market Weighton”.
At the same meeting, Cllr Michael Seaward was confirmed as Deputy
Town Mayor for a further year.
