New Supermarket for Market Weighton ?

Plans forging ahead to build a large supermarket on the vacant Europower site.

Following the closure of Europower Hydraulics in Southgate, Market Weighton a planning application is being pursued with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, " Demolition of existing industrial buildings and erection of retail unit with ancillary car parking, petrol filling station and new access arrangements".

The local Town Council and East Riding Planning Committee has backed outline plans for the development, councillors agreeing in principle to a retail store on the 4.2 acre site, which is about 100 metres south of the town's main shopping area.   The application now has to be approved by the regional Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber before firm designs can be drawn up and submitted for full approval.

The application has been submitted by the Leeds based Scotfield Group, who work closely with such names as Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda, and speculation is rife in the town about who will take up the site.

The presence of a large supermarket will be a major boost to the town, bringing much needed employment and potentially more shoppers into the area.   Clearly there will be those who are for and against the development, as is their right, and their views will no doubt be considered at the appropriate time.
