Tesco Supermarket confirmed for Market Weighton
New store expected to be open by summer 2006
Following the closure of Europower Hydraulics in Southgate, Market Weighton, outline planning permission has been granted by East Riding Council for a store, petrol station and car parking facilities on the site of the former Europower Hydraulics premises.
It has now been confirmed that the UK's number 1 supermarket Tesco is set to open a store in the town, possibly opening by summer 2006.
A Tesco spokesperson said: "Tesco will bring a very strong convenience offering to the town where there isn't one at the moment." and Market Weighton mayor Stephen King said: "There was a strong rumour that it was Tesco and now it's confirmed I think it's very good news and I think the people of the town, as a whole, will be pleased."
Tesco confirmed that the new store which is expected to have 1,800 square metres of retail space – making it about half the size of Tesco's Beverley store in Morton Lane would create about 150 full and part-time jobs.
