Londesborough Arms Hotel - Potential Closure

Plans are afoot to turn the hotel into flats.

Business people and residents in Market Weighton have expressed concern over recent planning applications concerning the Londesborough Arms, the only hotel in the town and a Grade II Listed Building.

The applications are fore 'Alterations in connection with the conversion of existing hotel into 19 residential units and 1 retail unit' and ' Land East Of Londesborough Arms : Erection of two dwellings.'

The Londesborough Arms situated adjacent to the Church of All Saints, dates back to the 18th century and is part of the town's heritage, it has been run as a hotel and public house since the eighteenth century.   It is an imposing brick built, three story building, and was an important coaching and posting inn, being on the York to Kingston upon Hull road.

It was known as the Briggs Inn until 1825 when it was renamed the Devonshire Arms.  The Londesborough name was taken in 1850 when the Lord of the Manor of Market Weighton changed to Londesborough.

The Londesborough Arms Hotel

Hopefully common sense will prevail and this development will not be allowed to take place.

The current situation is that the application for 'Erection of two dwellings' has been refused by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The application for 'Alterations in connection with the conversion of existing hotel into 19 residential units and 1 retail unit, is pending.

The hotel itself and its Italian restaurant is closed for business, the bar however is still open for business.
