Katie Croft wins the 487th Race which took take place on 16th March 2006

This year's gruelling race was contested by 9 riders and horses over the traditional course of 4 miles.   A very large crowd of spectators gathered at the finishing post on a bitterly cold day with occasional snow flurries, to witness the hard fought race, which was completed successfully over a difficult course by all 9 entrants.

The race was memorable in that it was Ken Holmes last race, and many of the spectators had come along to wish Ken all the best in his retirement, and maybe spur him on to win for the eleventh time.  Ken, now in his 74th year, has been a regular rider in the race since 1982.

However it wasn't to be and Ken managed a worthy 3rd place on 'Monty', behind Laura Crawford on 'Cool Affair in 2nd place, and winner Katie Croft on 'Etton Lad'.
