Town Mayor elected for 17th year.

At the Annual Town Council Meeting of Market Weighton Town Council held on Wednesday 10th May 2006 at the Town Hall, Cllr Stephen King was elected unopposed as Town Mayor for the 2006/07 Civic Year.

This will be Cllr King’s 17th year as Town Mayor – he was first elected Mayor in 1989 and has been re-elected annually since 1991.

Mrs Sarah Moody, Clerk to the Annual Town Council Meeting, said “it is unusual for a Town Mayor to be returned to office, and for this to happen again for the 16th consecutive time is, we believe, unique within Yorkshire and probably cannot be matched elsewhere in the country”.

Thanking members for their continued support, Cllr King - a Soil and Land Use Consultant, who also represents all the Town and Parish Councils within the East Riding of Yorkshire Council area on the Authority’s Standards Committee - said it was an honour and a privilege to once again be elected to serve as Town Mayor. “I will do my utmost to uphold the position of Town Mayor and to serve both the Town Council and the people of Market Weighton to the best of my ability” he said.

“As Town Mayor I look forward to playing a full part in the continuing regeneration of Market Weighton and to leading the Town Council - as the properly elected representatives of the Town -within the new town-wide spirit of partnership to bring to fruition the aspirations of the many and disparate groups now working towards a common goal.”

At the same meeting, Cllr Michael Seaward was confirmed as Deputy Town Mayor for a further year.
