East Riding Of Yorkshire News Release:  A1079 SAFETY CAMERAS TO GO LIVE

Humberside Safety Camera Partnership will be switching on 13 new fixed cameras along the A1079 from the evening of Friday, July 7. The partnership has installed seven fixed Truvelo cameras on Beverley bypass, from Killingwoldgraves roundabout, near Bishop Burton, to Dunswell roundabout.  A further six are in place at Arras Hill, Market Weighton, and along the town's bypass.
From 2000 to 2004, 190 people were injured and seven were killed on these two sections of the A1079.

Mick Harris, safety camera project manager, said: "Safety cameras have a proven record of reducing casualties, crashes and speed and we hope that we will quickly see the benefits of installing them along the A1079. "Regular drivers along the route have probably been held up by incidents in the past."

Sergeant Graham Johnstone, who runs the collision investigation section for Humberside Police, said: "I have attended a number of horrendous collisions where these cameras are now placed and I cannot begin to describe the human cost of a fatal collision - it literally destroys families. "I truly hope that the cameras lessen the calls to service for my staff who have to try to pick up the pieces as a result of these tragic incidents."

Councillor Symon Fraser, East Riding of Yorkshire Council's highways portfolio holder, said: "Let's remember just what these cameras are for, to improve driver behaviour and reduce death and injury from road accidents. "We judge success not by the number of drivers penalised for speeding but by the reduction in accidents." Research undertaken by the partnership showed more than half of drivers are unaware of what the national speed limit is on single and dual carriageways. Along these sections of the A1079, the single carriageway has a 60mph speed limit and the dual carriageway has a 70mph limit for cars and motorcycles, less for other types of vehicles. The three-lane section of road at Arras Hill, south east of Market Weighton, also has a 60mph limit. The partnership has been working closely with East Riding of Yorkshire Council to manage the casualty problems along different sections of the A1079.

Truvelo safety cameras are triggered by a series of sensors in the road and can take pictures of the front or rear of a vehicle. Their flash is covered by a coloured filter which lasts for one millisecond, meaning most people do not notice it has flashed. Both sections of the route will be supported by enforcement from the mobile safety camera units, which can be positioned almost anywhere along these sections of the A1079.
