The mediaeval town now known as
Market Weighton - The Heart of East Yorkshire
750 Years a Market Town, 1251 - 2001

South Dalton - in the East Riding of Yorkshire
5 miles north east of Market Weighton

The parish of Dalton Holme dating back to at least 1654 comprises two villages,
South Dalton and Holme-on-the-Wolds.

St Mary's Church

At this time Holme-on-the-Wolds had its own church, but now the imposing church of St Mary's serves both villages.
The church has a tall slender 'Pearson' steeple over 60m high, a local landmark for many miles around.  The church is in the High Gothic style of the 13th century, and faces the drive to Dalton Hall, built by the 3rd Lord Hotham. (who had the railway station built at Kiplingcotes )
He laid the first stone on April 8th 1858, and the church was finally consecrated on August 6th 1861 by the Archbishop of York.

Next to the church are the Tudor style Almshouses, 1873, also built by Lord Hotham, a picturesque group of cottages and a stone chapel.

St Mary's Church - South Dalton

The church at Holme-on-the-Wolds is now in ruins, however
some of its stone carvings can be seen at nearby Etton church.
